I was inspired recently by an email from a student, who having purchased one book that was recommended on a training course, sent me a photograph of three other related books they had purchased in order to further develop their knowledge. Hopefully this officer is indicative of the future of policing.
I am reminded of the words of General James Mattis: "If you haven’t read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate, and you will be incompetent, because your personal experiences alone aren’t broad enough to sustain you."
Isn't it a shame that more police academies do not provide their students with books to read as part of their training, choosing instead to hand out copies of the PowerPoint that has been used.
I would encourage all Chiefs of Police to raise the question as to what reading materials are being provided to their officers.
